Yes, safe

Can birds eat rice?

Yes. Cooked or uncooked plain rice is safe for birds. The story that raw rice swells and bursts birds' stomachs is a myth.

The details

The exploding-bird story dates to wedding-rice warnings in the 1980s. Ornithologists have long pointed out that wild birds eat dry grain, including rice in fields, every day. Uncooked rice does not expand enough in a bird's crop to harm it, and dried rice absorbs water slowly.

Cooked plain rice is a decent winter food for doves, juncos, sparrows and blackbirds. White and brown both work. Serve it cooled, without salt, butter or sauces.

The real risk is spoilage. Cooked rice left out in warm weather can grow Bacillus cereus, and uncooked rice that gets wet can mold. Put out only what birds will finish in a day.

How to offer it

  • Plain cooked rice, cooled, on a tray or the ground.
  • Uncooked rice scattered for ground feeders.
  • Mix with millet for doves and sparrows.

Avoid

  • Fried rice, seasoned or salted rice
  • Rice left out in heat for more than a day
