Frequently asked
How many kinds of hummingbirds live in the US and Canada?
About 11 species occur regularly. East of the Great Plains, nearly every hummingbird is a Ruby-throated; the West, especially Arizona, has many more.
When do hummingbirds come back?
Gulf Coast states see the first Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in late February and early March. They reach the Ohio Valley in mid-to-late April and southern Canada in May.
Does leaving feeders up stop hummingbirds from migrating?
No. Day length, not food, triggers migration. Late feeders help stragglers and the occasional western vagrant.
